Sometimes you crave a juicy sandwich. Not one from a deli that stacks the meat (or cheese in our case) five feet high. I’m not talking fancy paninis either. When I want a regular sandwich, the kind that goes best with a pickle and some potato chips, I head to The Grey Dog’s Coffee. This coffeehouse, which has locations in the East and West Village, is better suited for a bustling lunch, considering the swarm of customers, table-upon-table setup and extensive meal options, as opposed to a chill day at a café, as its name might suggest. Sandwiches are $6-10 and their veggie options go beyond just lettuce, tomato and onion. Think artichokes, roasted peppers, avocados and more. Woohoo!

What’s in it for you: Veggie press, fresh mozzarella press, grilled tofu wrap, hummus and feta wrap, veggie burger, etc.

What’s in it for them: Chicken melt, Philadelphia cheese steak wrap, BLT, roast beef press, etc.

It was just as delicious as it looks. I don’t love goat cheese when it’s piled high, but the herb flavor worked for me big time. And this may sound silly, but crinkle chips taste better than regular cut chips. Am I right??

Roast Beef Press: Roast beef with swiss cheese, sauteed onions, horseradish and served au jus

My friend loved his roast beef press but preferred the grilled chicken press (#6 on the menu) he got last time. Regardless of which sandwich you choose, top off your meal with their fresh raspberry lemonade, like we did, and you’ll have the ultimate lunch.

But even if you’re not in the mood for a sandwich, Grey Dog’s has a great selection of salads and brunch items like homemade granola with yogurt, omelette with homefries, fruit pancakes and a breakfast quesadilla. Or, if you just want some dessert and coffee, try one of their ENORMOUS cookies. Each is pretty much the size of my face, so you might want to share. Or not. I’ve certainly been there…

The line can seem long, but no worries – it moves quickly and there are so many tables that people are in and out in a jiffy. By the time you pay for your order, a table should be available.

Bon appétit!
