The West Village is such a brunch hot spot, but would you believe I’ve never really done this NYC tradition in that ‘hood? I needed to change that asap, so this past weekend my friends and I headed to the somewhat scene-y (but not in a toolish way, I think) restaurant Extra Virgin. How much of a scene is it? Well, Gisele lunched there Saturday (missed her by one day!) and Lake Bell brunched when we went. (Yes, only I recognize randoms like Lake Bell.)
I wouldn’t say the food is above and beyond any other brunch place, but I do recommend it because it’s tasty, traditional brunch.
What’s in it for you: Banana french toast, granola and yogurt, buttermilk oatmeal pancakes
What’s in it for them: Moroccan scramble with merguez sausage, sirloin burger, smoked salmon and potato tart
I split the pancakes and virgin frittata (goat cheese, roasted tomato, arugula, basil pesto), which made for a good balance. Because of its thickness, the frittata is more like an omelet and know that it’s huge and ideal for sharing. And if you’re ordering the pancakes because the oatmeal makes them sound healthy, you can barely taste the oatmeal. I love buttermilk pancakes, though, so this was fine by me.

Virgin frittata...it had such fresh pesto!

By the way, this is how the salt is served. Love it, even though it probably doesn't make for even distribution.
In general, Extra Virgin’s portions are pretty large. Besides the Virgin frittata, the banana french toast (which looked amazing and I’m totally trying next time) and the oregano roasted chicken sandwich, which my friend got, come pretty big, too. So the restaurant is a great option for when you want to share. Something else you’ll want to share?

French fries with Gorgonzola fondue
We shared it among the four of us and it was a perfect portion as an indulgent starter. The Gorgonzola is pretty rich so remember, friends, sharing is caring. But yes – it’s just as delicious as it sounds.
Extra Virgin, brunch and beyond, is a great example of simple, yet tasty American fare with a Mediterranean twist. It’s also one of those very “New York-y” places, as I like to call it.
Bon appétit!
