For the most part, Californians are right when they diss New York City’s Mexican food. Sure we have Baby Bo’s and Tortilla Flats (the latter being just an honorable mention), but besides that, we’ve got nada, except the admittedly bad Agave, Dos Caminos, Mary Ann’s, etc. But now I have some new ammo against Californians who think we can’t do Mexican–the Williamsburg Mexican joint (and it truly does have the bare bones look of a joint), La Superior.
The street food-style resto, which opened just one year ago, tastes way more authentic than anything else I’ve had in NYC–no hint of Old El Paso or Taco Bell seasoning in sight!
What’s in it for you: Rajas (peppers) tacos or quesadillas, hongos (mushroom) tacos or quesadillas, jalapeno rellenos, ezquites (corn with lime, cheese and mayo), cebolittas (grilled scallions)
What’s in it for them: Shredded chicken tacos/quesadillas, steak tacos/quesadillas, pescado zarandeado (fish topped with pico), chicken enchiladas
We were a group of six and since these were small plates, we ordered and shared about 10,000 dishes.
We started with the Mexican corn appetizer. Unlike the amazing corn at Cafe Habana in NoLita, La Superior’s comes in a cup. It’s not as fun as eating Habana’s cob version and not as life-changing, so this wouldn’t be my #1 dish recommendation. But that cheese…man that Cojita cheese…

Ezquites: Corn kernels with cheese, lime and Mexican mayo
The tacos and the quesdadillas, on the other hand, are highly recommended. They’re street style so the tacos are tiny and the quesadillas are manageable. Watch for the major amount of Cojita cheese on the quesadillas.

To cap off your meal, you should definitely try one of their refreshing agua frescas, which come in watermelon, pineapple, pricky pear and lime with zest. The prickly pear is a little strange, but the pineapple was clearly the winner amongst our party of six.

This place screams summertime street food so try to head there before the season’s end. Bon appétit!
