En route to Ess-a-Bagel last weekend, I passed by what I thought was a new cafe, which touted fresh, natural ingredients. But that wasn’t even what caught my eye first; what initially got me were the rows and rows of macaroons. Delicate French pastries in a relatively nondescript 1st Ave. cafe? Would they be any good?

We stopped in and, after scanning the menu of breads, quiches and healthy sandwiches, I inspected their macaroon selection, which included flavors like blackberry, mango and almond. I’ve never been obsessed with these mini cookie sandwiches, but the promise from the store’s owner that they were made fresh with pure ingredients piqued my interest.

Lavender honey (bottom left), rose lychee (bottom right) and espresso (top)

We got espresso, lavender honey and rose lychee and pretty soon after taking one (tiny) bite into them, it was: Going once? Going twice? Sold! (Didn’t even try the espresso because I don’t like coffee-flavored desserts.) The flavor power of these bite-size treats was unlike anything I had tasted before. So rich and full. The owner told us that the ingredients are all ground up before they’re included in the batter. The espresso macaroon, for example, is made with real ground coffee beans.

My favorite was most definitely the rose lychee, which tasted like it had been marinating in rose water. As for the lavender honey, it tasted amazing but it was more impressive for its fragrance. I challenge you to find a more potent lavender-scented bath product.
