To kick off my weekend of birthday fun (which pretty much just revolved around good food…fine by me!), my friends took me to the Natural Gourmet Cookery School in the Flatiron district. This vegetarian culinary school is all about healthy, seasonal food and every Friday at 6:30 p.m., students cook a three-course meal that’s open to the general public for $40 (includes tax and tip).

It’s kind of a hot ticket item, so definitely call ahead to reserve your spot if you’re interested. Once you get on the list, they send you the menu, which the students conceptualize and create themselves. They even come out for a little question-and-answer session after the meal and offer any insight you want to know about the meal.

The menu

Can’t quite read that? Here’s the menu:

Appetizer

Spring Onion and Roasted Garlic Consomme Roasted Artichoke, Fresh Shelled Fava, Radicchio & Rainbow Spout Salad with Hudson Valley Chardonnay Vinaigrette

Entrée

Farro Risotto with Asparagus, Morels, Spring Peas, Baby Radishes & Carrots with Housemade Spicy & Crispy Bean Curd, Reduced Balsamic Sauce and Chive Oil Garnish

Dessert

Strawberry Sorbet in an Almond Tuille cup with Strawberry Rhubarb Compote and Dark Chocolate Syrup

In one word: amazing. Everything was fresh, healthy and sent my taste buds on a magical ride.

Salad and consomme

Farro risotto

Strawberry sorbet with strawberry-rhubarb compote

Picking my favorite is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. But I will say that almond tuille cup was spectacular. Oh, and the spring onion and garlic consomme was so soothing. Also, that spicy bean curd in the risotto was delicious.

See? I told you I couldn’t pick.

(Thanks, friends!)
