I’ve been reading so much about Dos Toros near Union Square that it was high time I tried this burrito joint, started by two Berkeley, Calif. brothers, who wanted to bring Bay Area’s signature Mexican food style to the Big Apple.
I went on Cinco de Mayo (unintentionally!) and the line was out the door. Hard to tell whether that’s a regular thing or just holiday-specific, but it’s not too surprising considering the tiny size of the place. Was the line indicative of something magical inside?
Well, yes and no. First, take a look at the evidence:
I know I didn’t go classic Nor Cal since I didn’t get a burrito, but while standing in line, I noticed almost everyone had tacos, so I decided to go with the popular vote. In any case, burritos have always been a little too hefty for me.
I was starving so everything tasted amazing, but stepping back, I have a less hunger-induced view on it. The tortillas are the best part of the tacos. They’re fresh and actually tasty, which is surprising because most Mex places rely on what’s inside to bring out the quality. As far as the fillings, I love the fact that they use vegetarian-fed, hormone-free chicken, so I got one grilled chicken and one pinto bean.
Joined with sour cream, cheese (a melted slice, not shredded, which was different) and guacamole, the fillings were good, but not seasoned as much as I would’ve liked. But what it lacks in flavor it makes up for in juiciness. When you pick up their tacos, they’re jam-packed and waiting to be devoured. So perfect for those nights when you feeling like vegging out with Tex-Mex.
I also picked up a mango Mexican soda and we shared chips and guac, which, of everything, really needed a flavor boost.
On the scale of Chipotles and Qdobas, I deem Dos Toros better than Chipotle but on the same par as Qdoba, though Qdoba has a slight edge for their unbelievable queso. How was your Cinco de Mayo?
