Having grown up in New Jersey, it’s only natural that I have a certain affinity for diners. To some, they’re grungy, greasy and not very tasty. To me, they’re fun, offer satisfying comfort food staples and remind of so many high school nights out (we were clearly total badasses in those days!).
So I was pumped when my Brooklyn-dwelling friend invited my and our two newlywed friends to cross the bridge for brunch on a recent Sunday. She picked out something she knew I’d like, Dizzy’s, whose tagline is “a Finer Diner.” I liked it already!
What’s in it for you: Buttermilk pancakes; Belgian waffles; yogurt topped with granola and honey; grilled veggie wrap; amaretto and pecan French toast
What’s in it for them: Corned beef hash; smoked Nova lox platter; eggs Ben a Dizz (their take on Eggs Benedict); Dizzy’s Super burger; turkey club; Asian chicken salad
Dizzy’s offers a great prix-fixe brunch at $13.95 for an entree, juice and coffee or tea. Even before we got to Dizzy’s, my friend had raved about the veggie chili that comes with the huevos rancheros, so we both ordered it and man oh man, she was right. It had flavor and freshness, something that the other vegetarian chilis I’ve had (i.e. at Big Daddy’s, another diner, but one that i recommend only for desserts) totally lacked.
While our other friends got the Italian eggs and an omelet:
I’ve been to a few diners in NYC — Moonstruck, Big Daddy’s and a few more that were so nondescript that I can’t remember their names — but none has been as tasty as Dizzy’s. They get that comfort food can still have top-notch ingredients. This Jersey girl approves!
